Why WebP
PNG is a wonderful format for exactly two things: graphics with hard edges, and transparency. It is a terrible format for photographs — a product photo saved as PNG can weigh five times its visually identical JPEG, and it’s the single most common reason store pages carry megabytes they don’t need.
WebP solves the dilemma: photographic compression like JPEG, transparency like PNG, in files typically 25–35% smaller than JPEG and far smaller than PNG. Every current browser displays it, and every major platform accepts it.
What converts well

Does converting to WebP lose quality?
At the default quality of 82, the difference from the original is effectively invisible for photos and product imagery, while the file lands dramatically smaller. Push the slider to 95 for near-lossless output; the file grows accordingly.
Is transparency preserved?
Yes. WebP supports full alpha transparency, so logos and cut-out product images keep their transparent backgrounds — at a fraction of the PNG's size.
Do browsers and Shopify support WebP?
Every current browser displays WebP, and Shopify accepts WebP uploads. Its CDN also serves modern formats automatically — but starting from a lean file always ends leaner than starting from a heavy PNG.
Can I convert JPEGs too?
Yes — drop in JPEGs and they convert the same way. WebP typically comes out 25–35% smaller than a JPEG of comparable quality.
