3D & AR beta guide

Which products work best in 3D, what it costs, and how AR shows up on your product pages.

The 3D beta turns a single product photo into an interactive 3D model (a GLB file) and applies it natively to your Shopify product page — customers can spin the product around and, on phones, tap the AR badge to place it in their room at real size. No theme changes and no third-party viewer are involved; Shopify renders it with its built-in 3D support.

Availability and cost

  • Available on Growth and Scale plans while in beta.
  • A 3D asset costs 10 credits — as a standalone step or a +10 add-on to a Listing Studio refresh.
  • Generation takes roughly 3–5 minutes, longer than image steps.

Which products work best

3D reconstruction from a photo works best on rigid objects with a well-defined shape: mugs, bottles, cosmetics, shoes, bags, furniture, tools, electronics. It is not recommended for clothing or other soft, deformable products — fabric drape doesn’t survive the process, and garments are far better served by the studio’s on-model shots.

A few tips for better models:

  • Use a photo where the product fills most of the frame and is fully visible — no cropped edges.
  • Simple backgrounds help; Imagefall removes the background before reconstruction, and a clean cutout means a cleaner mesh.
  • Highly reflective, transparent, or very thin parts (glassware, wire racks) are the hardest cases — expect mixed results in beta.

Review before it ships

Like everything in Imagefall, the model lands in the review gallery first, in an interactive viewer where you can inspect it from every angle. Only when you approve and apply it does it attach to the product as GLB media. Files are compressed to stay within Shopify’s media limits while keeping detail. Your product photos remain the gallery’s primary media — the 3D model appears alongside them.

Beta expectations

“Beta” means quality varies by product more than we’d like. If a generation fails, its 10 credits are refunded automatically — see Troubleshooting failed steps. If it succeeds but you don’t love the mesh, you can regenerate or simply discard it — nothing is charged beyond the steps that ran, and nothing unapproved ever reaches your storefront.

Checking AR on a phone

After applying, open the product page on a recent iPhone or Android phone and tap the AR icon on the media viewer. iOS uses Quick Look and Android uses Scene Viewer — both are driven by the same asset Imagefall applied.
